In recognition of Diabetes Alert Day, Lighthouse Guild and the Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. co-hosted a Diabetes Wellness Fair, on Friday, March 23, in collaboration with GuildNet and the American Diabetes Association. The event was held at the Bronx Museum of Arts.

The Bronx is home to one of the neighborhoods in NYC with the highest prevalence of diabetes, a chronic illness with many life-threatening complications.  Diabetes is one of the leading causes of vision loss and blindness. To address the prevalence of diabetes, this Wellness Fair offered Bronx residents health screenings, as well as information on diabetes prevention, diagnosis and treatment. There were screenings for blood pressure, glucose (sugar) and vision. In addition, engaging workshops were held throughout the day on diabetes nutrition, aging, exercise, vision health, and the latest devices and adaptive technology for people with vision loss. There was also cooking and dancing -- a chef prepared healthy meals and a Zumba class was held.
